There are many reasons why people seek the help of a personal trainer :  to lose weight, to get into shape, perhaps to do
body building…my story is completely different.  It is meant to inspire the timid folk of the world, those non-athletic, middle-
aged people who find themselves in a position where they require exercise, but have neither the skills nor the courage to
do it.

In December 2002, I suffered a dislocated kneecap, not through a glamorous sport injury, but through a simple daily
activity.  I was in a cast for approximately 5 weeks and when the cast was removed, I found myself with a completely
straight leg.  I began a physiotherapy program whose purpose was not only to restore my range of motion, but also to
allow me to learn to walk properly again and to strengthen all the muscles around the knee to prevent further injury.  After
almost two and a half years of hard work, I then found myself in the happy position of no longer requiring physiotherapy.
However, I had been warned that I needed to continue to exercise and strengthen the knee, probably for the rest of my life,
so as to avoid any possible problems and injuries.

I needed help with «post-physiotherapy» exercises. Although I have always been an active person who enjoys walking,
gardening and dancing, I have never been an «athletic» type and used to sweat just to set foot in a sports store.  I visited
a well-known gym but realized right away that I would be extremely nervous and uncomfortable in that type of
environment.  My message therapist suggested that I look for a personal trainer to help design a program that I could
follow at home.

I found Ken and gave him a call.   I was immediately put at ease even during our initial telephone conversation, as he
understood right away my apprehensions and my requirements.  He asked all kinds of questions and showed immense
patience.

I continued to feel completely at ease during our first actual meeting.  Ken designed a fitness program for me that
addressed the necessity to strengthen the knees, but he also stressed the importance of strengthening the upper parts
of the body which I had neglected during the rehabilitation of my knee.  We had a couple of practice sessions in my
office.  Ken provided the equipment needed :  a bench, therabands, weights and a large synthetic ball.  The latter piece of
equipment, the large ball, turned out to be invaluable as I am still trying to master the art of squatting, an extremely painful
movement for me.

During these sessions, my apprehensions completely disappeared and I felt totally comfortable.  Ken has a way of
making you feel confident in what you are doing, without ever pushing you to do what you feel you cannot manage.  This
approach is extremely important and comforting to a person who has suffered an injury and is still apprehensive in her
movements.

I subsequently learned about the facilities available at Variety Village, a center for people of all types of abilities (and
disabilities) and decided, with Ken’s agreement, that I would work out at that facility rather than purchase equipment for
my home.  I had three workout sessions with Ken in my office (all at a very reasonable price) and then one evening Ken
accompanied my husband and myself to Variety Village where he pointed out the different types of equipment I should be
using, showed me the proper way to use this equipment and then put a program on paper that I could follow and
manage very well.

My mission is to now put that program into practice – the beauty of it is that I can use it for quite a long period of time, as it
is basic enough to help a beginner, but it can be modified as I become stronger and able to do more.  Ken is also always
just a phone call away to answer any questions, to check up on my progress and to offer expertise and much needed
encouragement.   I am not alone in the weird and wonderful world of weights!
